About Us
Chaozhou Mogher (潮州·母语) is a Teochew dictionary and idiom collection website. Founded in 2005, it is one of the earliest and most comprehensive Teochew language resources on the internet. Teochew, one of the oldest surviving Sinitic varieties, preserves a large amount of Middle Chinese linguistic elements — elegant and archaic — and has been widely recognized by linguists as a living fossil of ancient Chinese. This site aims to digitize Teochew phonetics, vocabulary, and related materials, ensuring these linguistic features are not lost through cultural exchange and the passage of time, while serving the needs of learners and researchers. Our standard is based on the speech of old Chaozhou city, while broadly recording accent variations across the region to present a complete picture of the Teochew language. Our notation system primarily uses the Pe̍h-ūe-jī (PUJ) romanization developed by 19th-century missionaries, and also supports the 1960 Chaozhou Romanization scheme issued by Guangdong provincial authorities, to meet the needs of different users. Teochew culture, as a unique part of world heritage, is widely known. Through this site, we hope to better promote this distinctive culture to the world.
About Chaozhou
Chaozhou is located in eastern Guangdong, on the middle and lower reaches of the Hanjiang River. A national historical and cultural city with over 2,000 years of history, it has been the seat of prefecture, state, circuit, and government since the Eastern Jin established Haiyang County. It serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of eastern Guangdong. Known as "Famous State of Lingnan" and "Maritime Zoulu", Chaozhou's rich cultural heritage has given rise to distinctive local culture: Teochew opera, Teochew gongfu tea, Teochew music, Teochew cuisine, and Teochew embroidery are all renowned at home and abroad.
Phonetic Standard
Our standard is based on the speech of Chaozhou Fucheng (the present-day Chaozhou city area), while broadly recording accent variations across the region. The speech of Chaozhou Fucheng has gradually changed over the past 200 years. This site records both 19th-century missionary recordings and modern speech. In dictionary character search results, modern speech takes precedence; in other romanized texts and examples, 19th-century speech is used, as the difference between the two is minor and does not affect understanding, while the older speech better distinguishes the phonetic categories of characters.
